Leading the Common Core Initiative : A Guide for K-5 School Librarians

Description

Defining both the Common Core Standards and the school librarian's role in their implementation, this book offers ready-to-use lesson plans and other tools for grades K-5 and identifies opportunities for collaborative teaching. * Defines the Common Core State Standards in English and mathematics * Draws parallels to American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards * Discusses the impact of the CCSS on specific aspects of library administration, such as policies and collection management * Examines how CCSS affects classroom and collaborative instruction in the library * Identifies opportunities for the librarian to help in staff development in the CCSS

Scale Shapes is an exciting and unique diagram-based way to learn Piano scales using the Stocken Method. Based on the requirements of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Scale Shapes is an invaluable aid for grade exams and general progress. Written in an engaging and entertaining manner, this new book from leading Catholic biblical scholar Henry Wansbrough charts the use and abuse of scripture throughout the ages. It ranges from the evangelists' engagement with the Hebrew Scriptures to the use of the Bible in present day politics - perhaps Leading the Common Core Initiative : A Guide for K-5 School Librarians download ebook most pertinently in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Wansbrough takes as his starting point Frances Young's "The Art of Performance". This enables him to creatively display how 'The Bible' is 'performed' differently in different ages. Wansbrough demonstrates the variety of these performances and their different emphases in the history of Christianity to glimpse the different ways in which great figures within the Christian tradition have used and abused the Bible. Indirectly, therefore, it attacks the ever-present danger of fundamentalism, and single-minded interpretation of the Bible. Viewing the interpretation of the Bible against the background of various historical periods gives a valuable insight into the long and rich history of the Church. A final chapter provides a 'worked example' of "Lecto Divina" providing a window into the author's personal life of praying the Bible.

The Balancing Act : Gendered Perspectives in Faculty Roles and Work Lives

Description

This book is of interest to all women in faculty ranks. It deals with extensive academic marketing. Why are women not entering academic careers at a rate proportional to their degree attainment? And once they enter academe, why are they are not achieving tenure or gaining promotion at the same rate as men? How can deeper understanding of attitudes toward academic women combined with research on their experiences within the academic environment, in particular those balancing family and academic careers, help us to shape more responsive institutional policies and environments? These questions are all the more urgent during current times when institutions recognize the need to recruit more women and faculty of color to meet their changing missions and student demographics. This book argues that creating healthy and equitable work environments for women is good for the whole academic community. Indeed, the authors make the point that, as the feminization of academe continues, failure to implement gender equity and family friendly initiatives could be perilous. This book brings together new and original research - representing a broad range of institutional types - that reveals the pressures women face to postpone childbirth and limit the size of their families; that exposes the often the inequitable treatment of their scholarship when women are part of a dual-career couples; and that identifies other tacit and structural barriers to women's advancement. This book challenges assumptions about how men and women manage the boundaries between their personal and professional lives and suggests new ways to creatively and collaboratively combine productive work lives and satisfying personal lives. It shows how women have agency in structuring their careers and describes a multiplicity of solutions that they and institutions can adopt to create new couple- and family-friendly structures and practices that will encourage women to stay in the pipeline. This book, and its companion volumes in the "Women in Academe" series, offers compelling data and ideas both for women scholars seeking fulfillment in their professional and personal lives, and for administrators who recognize the need to transform their work places.

Determined to reconstruct the world and defining themselves against their parents, they were in several senses a revolutionary generation. The Ireland that eventually emerged bore little relation to the brave new world they had conjured up in student societies, agit-prop theatre groups, vegetarian restaurants, feminist collectives, volunteer militias, Irish-language summer schools, and radical newspaper offices. Roy Foster's book investigates that world, and the extraordinary people who occupied it.

Paradise Planned: The Garden Suburb and the Modern City

Description

From the same team that produced the monumental five-volume architectural history of New York comes the definitive work on the development of the garden suburb, a phenomenon that first emerged in England in the 1830s and still dominates residential architecture today. As malls are abandoned and mortgages are foreclosed, the retrofitting of the suburbs is a central issue in urban planning today. New strategies are emerging - creating walk-able communities with social and retail centres - that hark back to the original concept of the suburb. 'Paradise Planned' is a comprehensive, encyclopaedic record of this development, a vital contribution to architectural history.

An anthology of both new and previously published essays and articles from one of the mainstays of the Washington, DC underground rock-and-roll scene, The Psychic Soviet is the most complete collection of writings by Ian Svenonius. The selections are written in a scholarly yet engaging style, filled with parody and biting humor that subvert capitalist culture, and cover such topics as the ascent of the DJ as a star, the ?cosmic depression? that followed the defeat of the USSR, and the status of rock and roll as a religion. The pocket-sized book is bound with a durable bright-pink plastic cover, recalling the aesthetics of Mao?s The Little Red Book, and perfect for carrying into the fray of street battle, Paradise Planned: The Garden Suburb and the Modern City free epub classroom, or lunch counter argument. OUTSTANDING FEATURES: * written by a recovered driving phobic who knows what you are going through * features the most up to date research on driving fear * includes advice from a wide range of leading therapists and experts in driving phobia * includes practical exercises, many of which can be done without leaving your home * part of the royalties from the sale of this book are donated to a charity.

George R. R. Martin: A Game of Thrones (a Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

A Game of Thrones (a Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

Description

HBO's hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R. R. Martin's internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A GAME OF THRONES is the first volume in the series. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the GAME OF THRONES. Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where a 700-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. The Game of Thrones. You win, or you die. Book One of A Song of Ice and Fire begins the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. Winter is coming...

In Paddy Doyle's own words: 'It is about a society's abdication of responsibility to a child. The fact that I was that child, and that the book is about my life, is largely irrelevant. The probability is that there were, and still are, thousands of 'me's.' In 1996, Alan Sokal published an essay in the hip intellectual magazine "Social Text" parodying the scientific John Clare pdf but impenetrable lingo of contemporary theorists. Here, Sokal teams up with Jean Bricmont to expose the abuse of scientific concepts in the writings of today's most fashionable postmodern thinkers. From Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva to Luce Irigaray and Jean Baudrillard, the authors document the errors made by some postmodernists using science to bolster their arguments and theories. Witty and closely reasoned, "Fashionable Nonsense" dispels the notion that scientific theories are mere "narratives" or social constructions, and explored the abilities and the limits of science to describe the conditions of existence.

Peter Doyle: British Postcards of the First World War

British Postcards of the First World War

Description

Postcards sent by men on the front, and to them by their families, are among the most numerous, and most telling, surviving artefacts of the Great War. They tell us much about attitudes towards the war, and provide a great insight into men's lives, and into the thoughts and emotions of those left behind. Very different in their illustration, and in their writing, between the beginning of the war and the end, postcards provide a social history of the war in microcosm. Illustrated with a wide range of postcards, this is a fascinating look into the response of the British people to the horrors of the war.

In Paddy Doyle's own words: 'It is about a society's abdication of responsibility to a child. The fact that I was that child, and that the book is about my life, is largely irrelevant. The probability is that there were, and still are, thousands of 'me's.' Max Weber,Guenther Roth,Claus Wittich: Economy and Society

Economy and Society

Description

Published posthumously in the early 1920's, Max Weber's Economy and Society has since become recognized as one of the greatest sociological treatises of the 20th century, as well as a foundational text of the modern sociological imagination. The first strictly empirical comparison of social structures and normative orders conducted in world-historical depth, this two volume set of Economy and Society--now with new introductory material contextualizing Weber's work for 21st century audiences--looks at social action, religion, law, bureaucracy, charisma, the city, and the political community. Meant as a broad introduction for an educated general public, in its own way Economy and Society is the most demanding textbook yet written by a sociologist. The precision of its definitions, the complexity of its typologies, and the wealth of its historical content make the work an important challenge to our sociological thought: for the advanced undergraduate who gropes for her sense of society, for the graduate student who must develop his own analytical skills, and for the scholar who must match wits with Weber.

Ryan is about to board a plane, knowing that the next twenty-four hours will change everything. His mission is to stop the biggest terrorist attack America's ever seen. Ryan works for CHERUB, a secret organisation with one key advantage: even a trained terrorist won't suspect that a teenager is spying on them. For official purposes, these children do not exist. From the Acropolis to Mount Olympus, The Sites of Ancient Greece offers a birds-eye view of some of the most famous and evocative landscapes, cities and buildings in history, many of them UNESCO World Heritage sites. After an introductory chapter on the studio, technique, and the subject matter of sculpture, the author offers specific, detailed directions for sculpting with plastic earths, plastic wax, and plaster of paris. You'll also find expert chapters on casting, sculptural use of metals, surface treatment of metals, and sculpture in stone and wood as well as such exotic materials as amber, brick, coal, concrete--even butter! In the Economy and Society download ebook pdf course of the book, Mr. Rich supplies many pertinent historical and other notes, and documents trends in contemporary sculpture.

The Human Face of War pdf, epub, mobi

Jim Storr: The Human Face of War

The Human Face of War

Description

Warfare is hugely important. The fates of nations, and even continents, often rests on the outcome of war and thus on how its practitioners consider war. The Human Face of War is a new exploration of military thought. It starts with the observation that much military thought is poorly developed - often incoherent and riddled with paradox. The author contends that what is missing from British and American writing on warfare is any underpinning mental approach or philosophy. Why are some tank commanders, snipers, fighter pilots or submarine commanders far more effective than others? Why are many generals sacked at the outbreak of war? The Human Face of War examines such phenomena and seeks to explain them. The author argues that military thought should be based on an approach which reflects the nature of combat. Combat - fighting - is primarily a human phenomenon dominated by human behaviour. The book explores some of those human issues and their practical consequences. The Human Face of War calls for, and suggests, a new way of considering war and warfare.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM VERY BRITISH PROBLEMS ABROAD? If you...*Carry emergency teabags in your money belt *Quietly tut at badly formed 'queues' *Cleverly avoid blisters by wearing socks with your sandals ...then you may have a serious problem for The Human Face of War free ebook which there is no know vaccination. But don't worry: Rob Temple is here to explain the symptoms/make fun of you. (In the nicest possible way.) Critics called the first Very British Problems book 'not bad' and 'easy to gift-wrap', so in an attempt to outdo himself, Rob's taking us outside of our comfort zone. We're going to that alarming place where crisps don't quite taste the same and where ordering chips get you...well, crisps. We're going abroad. From the optimum number of times to carry out panicky pre-trip passport checks to the horror of returning home to a milkless house, this is an affectionate into the cultural quirks and strange obessions that make us all so very British - especially when we leave the country.

How to Entice an Enchantress: The Duchess Diaries pdf

Karen Hawkins: How to Entice an Enchantress: The Duchess Diaries

How to Entice an Enchantress: The Duchess Diaries

Description

Reclusive Viscount Kirk, horribly scarred by a tragic accident that stole the life of his beloved first wife, is a man defined by fury. For years he's eschewed society, growing abrupt and curmudgeonly. But now, when he'd given up on life, he's fallen madly in love with the refreshingly naive daughter of his neighbour, dainty and charming Dahlia Balfour. Desperate to win her attention, Kirk calls in a favour from the Duchess of Roxburghe and asks that she transform him into a fashionable suitor for Dahlia's hand. But what's easy to change on the outside isn't as easy to change on the inside… Dahlia's always dreamed of a fairy-tale romance. Although Viscount Kirk is only seven years her senior, because of his cantankerous ways and lack of social graces she thinks of him as her "older neighbour," and is blissfully unaware that he sees her as anything other than an acquaintance. She is shocked to see him at the duchess's grand house party, trying to fit with the very societal rules he so frequently mocks. Surprised by his attention, irritated at his bald honesty, and intrigued that he finds her worth the effort, Dahlia regards Kirk as the opposite of Prince Charming. Without the pretty words and grand gestures she yearns for, can true love find its way into her unwilling heart?
